Midterm 2 post

From my point of view, I believe that art, music, literature, and other cultural productions have greatly impacted the relationships between different people, and bring people together with different cultural backgrounds but with the same determination. After learning about the Chinese in Honululu and Jamaica, the Koreans in Befu, and Okinawans in Japan, fighting against the hegemony, imperialism, and colonialism, I can strongly agree with the fact that the arts can eventually bring people together.

We can clearly see how the different types of arts work by analyzing the three types of people. Speaking of the Chinese in Honululu, in order to stay with each other, they built the Chinatown on Honululu to preserve their lives and culture. For the Chinese in Jamaica, they were first being targeted by Jamaicans because they believed the Chinese immigrants took all their jobs away from them, and the relation between Chinese and Jamaicans was intense. However, thanks to the music, the Chinese and Jamaicans were back together to share the same joy towards music. For the Koreans, it was the newspapers that brought them together because they had the same determination. For the Okinawans in Japan, they adopted the culture from Japan in order to fit into the Japanese society.

Speaking of myself as a Chinese international student who went to the U.S. as a sophomore, I missed China so much when I first arrived in Massachusetts, where my high school was. One way that helped me find my belonging as a Chinese was watching Chinese shows and listening to Chinese music, these cultural productions have made me feel warm, and less lonely.
