Week 2 discussion post

In my opinion, settler imperialism means a powerful country with ambition to take lands and abundant resources by using armed force, enslave the indigenous people, and starting productions, and finally, al the indigenous people will be replaced by the new-comers, which are the settles. Take Hawaii as an example, Hawaii used to be a kingdom ruled by native Hawaiians, however, the Americans arrived Hawaii and used settler colonialism on them. From what I have learned, the Americans built plantations to produce coffee for the U.S. army, lots of Japanese immigrated to Hawaii, essentially the Army landed on Hawaii and took the land of Hawaii, the Hawaii Kingdom died out. Same thing happened to China, at the end of 20th century, the Japanese had great ambition to take the northeast part of China, and finally colonize China, because Japan is an isolated island with deficient resources. Let’s focus on China, After the opium war and under the govern of Qing dynasty, China was poor and weak, so it was easy for the Japanese target on China, the largest country in Asia with sufficient resources. The first step they did was to colonize Taiwan, after China lost the first Sino-Japanese war, China signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki, which ceded Taiwan to Japan. The Japanese started school in Taiwan and forced the Taiwanese to learn Japanese and culture, the Japanese made their own rules, which made them superior that Taiwanese. Later in the early 20th century, the Japanese invaded the northeast part of China, similar to what they did in Taiwan, they built school and forced Chinese to learn Japanese, they also built factories to transport oil and gas to Japan.
